The 5 Gravest Mis-Perks of Being a Pakistani Independent Woman

When you’re living in a collectivist, South Asian society like ours, every twenty-something girl wants to move out of the parent house and be on her own as soon as possible. Living with the family for too long can be draining with all the unnecessary restrictions and overprotective pampering. However, once you do end up being the independent loner, you start missing your mother’s constant nagging to have healthy food and her persistent attempts to make you feel better when you’re sick to the bone.

Me: AMMI, DAWAI PILA DEIN PLS!
Mom: Sorry, dawg but you iz independent af now.

Here is a list of 5 misperks of being an independent yet oh-so-miserable Pakistani female.

1. You Won’t Come Home to Delicious Cooked Meals

Ammi nahin tou khana nahin.

2. You Will Have to Wash Clothes Yourself

Ammi, colours mix hogaye. Help me pls.

3. Making Your Bed Has Never Been So Hard!

I didn’t know the bed has so many corners. Ammiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

4. Sweeping The Floor is a Pain in the Buttocks

Had I been a little more careful regarding the house chores during childhood, I wouldn’t have felt so useless now. Sigh.

5. Grocery Shopping is Really Not Fun

When you have your mom tagging along with you as the bank, grocery shopping can be a lot of fun. Yeah you can get all the junk you want: chips, maggi, candy, you name it! Solo super market trips, however, hmm, not so cool…

Living alone is quite a liberating feeling but when it comes to doing all the shit by yourself…ah not so much. Best of luck to all the independent desi females out there who have moved out or are planning to do so soon!
